I am a human.

My name is Lynnea Thorkelson (she/her). I feel, think, create and move. I make mistakes, and learn by living. I have been hurt, humbled and walked through the cycles healing. I strive to live with an open heart, and let myself feel the stings and the soars of life.

I have prairie roots and west coast branches. I live on the unceded, traditional lands of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. I am a third generation settler, and I am grateful for the opportunity to thrive here.

I believe in the power of relationships: with people, with nature, with the creative force and mysterious energies of life.

I am impacted by the world around me. Being human is not always easy, in fact, it is often quite difficult. Compassion and self-compassion practices are a balm, regularly, in my life. Ample doses of beauty, and gratitude, as well.

I practice being in my body.

I practice because I am often in my head. I practice because it resources my nervous system, helps me build capacity for the tough stuff. Embodiment has helped me heal.

Mindfulness is a big part of my practice; yoga, and dancing too. I love to guide body scans and visualization activities. There is wisdom in tuning into, and honouring our bodily experiences and impulses.

Bringing kind attention to the body has helped me develop presence and deepened the richness of my life.

I am expressive.

I have things to say (we all do), and I try to use different tools to say them. I believe communications come from our heads, our bodies, our hearts, and souls. All parts of us want to be seen and heard.

I am honoured to offer space for others to express their truths. I believe every experience is synthesized through expression. I really love to listen and witness each individual’s unique journey unfold in the process of using art therapy and facilitating therapeutic experiences in community.

Education and Experience

As a Registered Art Therapist, over the last 8 years I have worked with people of all ages: from children to seniors.

My work is grounded in the philosophy that humans are filled with experiences, stories and potentials that are looking to be processed and expressed.

Creativity and creative tools can provide a path to improved quality of life, allowing us to be in our senses, in the moment and resourced to be with our tough stuff. I also know the value of strong reciprocal relationships and how they can contribute to healing and growth.
